Belt Rupture Switches

Belt Rupture Switches are electronic conveyor protection devices designed to detect belt rupture or ripping conditions. The system uses optical sensing technology and a microcontroller-based controller to detect falling material caused by belt damage and provide a signal for conveyor protection and shutdown functions.

The system consists of a controller together with an optical transmitter and receiver installed below the conveyor belt. If the belt becomes ruptured or ripped, conveyed material can fall through the damaged area into the sensor detection zone. The sensing system detects this falling material and sends the condition to the controller for alarm or conveyor trip action through the appropriate control system.

How Belt Rupture Switches Work

Detection Sequence

  • The optical transmitter and receiver are installed below the conveyor belt.
  • During normal conveyor operation, the sensing system continuously monitors the detection area.
  • If the conveyor belt develops a rupture or rip, conveyed material may fall through the damaged section.
  • The falling material enters or interrupts the optical sensing area.
  • The microcontroller-based controller processes the sensor signal and provides an output for alarm or conveyor trip action.
  • Depending on configuration, restart can be Automatic or Manual.

Status, Bypass & Delay

LED indications are provided for individual channel status, sensor status and output status, helping operators identify operating and fault-status information.

Individual sensing channels can be blanked or bypassed using the provided switching arrangement. The controller also provides an adjustable nuisance-tripping delay to help prevent unwanted operation caused by short-duration disturbances.

The system includes self-checking circuitry designed to continuously monitor the sensing beams or channels. If a sensing-beam failure is detected, the controller can provide an output for appropriate conveyor control action.
