Selecting a proximity sensor begins with the target, environment and control system—not only the sensing distance.
Start with the target
The material, size, speed and distance of the target determine whether inductive, capacitive, optical or magnetic sensing is most suitable. Inductive sensors are commonly used for metallic targets, while capacitive sensors can detect a wider range of materials when correctly configured.
Review the operating environment
Temperature, dust, moisture, vibration and electrical noise affect enclosure, cable and mounting choices. Confirm the installation area and required protection before selecting a model.
Confirm electrical compatibility
Match the supply voltage, switching output and logic with the PLC, relay or control circuit receiving the signal. Verify PNP/NPN requirements, normal state and connection method.
Plan the mounting
Flush or non-flush mounting, surrounding metal and target approach direction can change performance. Allow safe mechanical clearance and follow the selected model’s installation guidance.
